The Banyan Tree Nummes starts his first day at school. How will it go? Will he understand what is happening? Quickly he adapts to school: school life and the games, tricks and lessons learnt by young Island boys.

Basil George is a Saint Helenian, born and brought up on the Island of St.Helena in the middle of the South Atlantic Ocean. Basil’s devotion to his Island and its community have been an integral part of his life, amply demonstrated through his work in education and his commitment to the restoration of British citizenship to the people os St.Helena. His professional career in education saw Basil take up teaching in his twenties, gain an Honours degree in education in Leicester, UK and become Headmaster of the Secondary Selective School on his return to the Island. In the early eighties he became Chief Education Officer and was closely involved in a project to establish the Island’s Prince Andrew Community High School for all children. Basil has always had as keen interest in youth and creativity. These interests are combined here to produce some of the Island’s first interests are combined here to produce some of the Island’s first children’s stories written by an Islander. Set in 1940’s St.Helena,the “tree” stories are for children of the Island, using Island language, instilling a sense of identity.
Basil lives on St.Helena with his wife, children and grandchildren.
